The 21 year old Los Angeles native and singer, Payton Moore, takes to the God Is Dope Live Stage with a breathtaking cover performance of "Unthinkable" by Alicia Keys and her original song "Rather Be".
Would you interpret your skills as a gift from God or a learned talent?
Definitely a gift from God. Although I still give myself a lot of credit for all my hard work which lead to what my voice is today, I still can’t deny my talent from also being a gift.
What genre would you classify your music as?
I feel as if i’m still in the process of finding my sound. I don’t want to box myself into one genre but if I had to classify my sound & music I’d say alternative R&B.
How were you introduced into your love of music?
Even though no one in my childhood home was musically inclined, music still played a big role in my upbringing. My mom was a huge music lover and introduced me to all of my biggest inspirations, Whitney Houston, Beyoncé, Michael Jackson, Usher, etc. The list goes on, but those artists & their music were extremely influential to me & my voice then & even now. One of my childhood inspirations i’d love to collab with is Usher. He’s always been a huge favorite of mine & I think our voices would mesh together so well. Some other artists & producers I’d love to collab with are Kehlani, Ty Dolla Sign, Jhene Aiko, The Internet, Pharrell, Boi-1da, YogiTheProducer, & The Rascals.
What emotions do you hope to invoke with your music?
Honestly just more vulnerability. I know personally I have a hard time being super open & transparent, so that’s one thing i’m definitely working on through my music. I want those who listen to my music to feel comfort in being open & honest with their emotions & feelings. It’s almost like we’re on a journey together to finding what that feels like & what that is for each of us individually.
What is your creative process like?
If I’m having consuming thoughts I like to write them down, get them out my head, & then later on turn them into songs. Other times I’ll set the mood with a candle or two, some green tea, sometimes a few crystals, & dim the lights to create a more intimate feeling. Then I’ll listen to a few beats & see which one speaks to me most and let it take me away and create my own little world for it. Sometimes I have a lot to say and some times I don’t have much to say at all, but just want to create a vibe for that moment & whatever I’m feeling in that moment.
What project(s) are you currently working on? Recently I’ve dropped a single “Align”, along with my first music video! I’ve also been doing some live performances for Overdozstudios, Velvet Residence, & yours truly, God Is Dope Live. Due to Covid I haven’t been doing too many live, in person performances but i’ve been using this time to focus on my music. I’m currently working on two projects, one set to drop before 2021 ends & the other soon after. I’m super excited to share these upcoming projects, I feel like they embody my growth vocally & me personally in my own life.
